The larger diameter section—referred to as the step or shoulder—is machined to a precise width and concentricity. When the pin is driven into a housing bore, the step bottoms against the housing face. This creates a repeatable depth stop, eliminating the need for separate spacers or manual measurement during assembly. The smaller diameter section (pilot) guides insertion and provides the bearing or pivot surface. Step and pilot diameters are ground after heat treatment to hold tolerances within ±0.05. Surface finish is held to 16 Ra or better for consistent fit.
